Guitar modeling amps with USB Connectivity
Sure, you have a fancy modeling amplifier with some preset slots, and you learnt to mess around with the settings. You love your amp, and the tones you already discovered on it are just lovely. But what if some time in the future you get tired of pressing that green button for 3 three seconds until it turns red, while you hold that awkward kneeling position...? What if you get tired of bending your back to read those tiny letters above the knobs? What if you feel like editing and managing your presets on a more user-friendly fashion? Perhaps on your computer, using your mouse and keyboard... You could even organize them by categories, store them on different folders, create a database of your tones!
On the other hand, what if you feel like getting your tones, your jams or even some song ideas recorded on your pc? Share them over the web, edit them on some multitrack editor, add drums and some piano to the sketch... But you wished you didn't have to mess around too much with cables, microphones and "unnecesary" additional gadgets...
Well, it is possible. All this with one same amp, and nothing else. All you need is a USB port on the amp, to send sound from the amp to the PC, and to exchange the preset data between you amp and your PC!!
I've searched through the web, but nobody seems to have gathered the already-several amplifiers with USB port in one list. Tadaa, I decided to create that list ;). Maybe nobody thought about doing it before because guitar amps with USB ports are a relatively modern concept, and people don't seem to have realised yet the array of possibilities it opens up. So, here goes a list of guitar amplifiers with USB connectivity, along with the most important technical features of each one.
There is also other way to gain usb connectivity on an amp: through the included pedal when it has itself a USB port (for instance, the FBV Express Mk II that you can buy with a Line 6 Vetta II amplifier). However, discussing these cases was excluded from this article, mainly for two reasons. First, it is redundant since even the guitar amps that don't have optional footswitches with USB connectivity may be connected to a "non-related" multi-fx pedal that can serve as the amp-to-pc "USB bridge" (like a Boss GT8 multi fx pedal). Second, using a pedal to connect the amp to the pc might keep the preset management possibilities, but sacrifices the option to send the guitar amp sound directly to the computer (at least without YET ANOTHER interface of some sort). So we're sticking to amplifiers that have a usb port by themselves. ;)
